Police Officer Charged with ‘Incompetence’ After Accidentally Shooting Driver with His Own Gun
A traffic stop in Florida turned tragic when Jason Arrington was accidentally shot in the leg with his own gun during an arrest on December 13, 2024. The incident occurred after Arrington, who was pulled over for running a red light, informed Officer Shaun Lowry that he was carrying a firearm. While being detained, Officers Austin Weippert and Mindy Cardwell attempted to secure the weapon. Officer Cardwell inadvertently discharged the gun while trying to remove it from Arrington’s holster, due to her fingers being inside the trigger guard. Following the event, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released body cam footage and confirmed that an internal investigation found Cardwell guilty of incompetence, leading to her termination. Arrington later spoke publicly about the impact on his life and his intention to file a lawsuit.
